iPhone alarm not waking you up?

By Updated 3 min read

The short answer

First check whether your iPhone alarm actually sounds during a short test while you are awake. A missing or quiet sound is a different problem from hearing the alarm and dismissing it. Use Apple Clock guidance for Apple's app and the app's own setup instructions for a third-party mission alarm.

“My alarm did not wake me” does not always mean the alarm failed to play. Before changing apps or adding more alarms, check which part of the process failed: the scheduled time, the sound, the dismissal, or getting up afterward.

Run a test you can observe

Set an alarm a few minutes ahead and watch what happens. Confirm the intended time, whether the alarm is enabled, and any day or repeat settings. Keep the phone in the setup you normally use overnight so the result is relevant.

Record whether you see an alarm, hear a sound, and successfully dismiss it. If a test works only after changing a setting, repeat the test with that setting before relying on it overnight. For a morning you cannot miss, keep an independently tested backup while you troubleshoot.

If you use Apple's built-in Clock app

Apple's support guidance says to check the alarm's selected sound and volume. A sound set to None can leave an alarm without the audible cue you expected. Follow Apple's current instructions for the controls available on your version of iOS.

Apple also states that Silent mode and Do Not Disturb do not stop its Clock alarm from sounding. That guidance is specific to Apple's app; it does not establish how every third-party alarm behaves.

If you use Only Alarm or another alarm app

Follow that app's onboarding and setup prompts, then test it with your intended overnight settings. Do not assume instructions for Apple Clock apply to a separate app. If your setup includes Focus modes, a locked screen, or connected audio devices, include those conditions in the test.

For Only Alarm, contact support if the test does not behave as expected. Include your iPhone model, iOS version, app version, alarm time, relevant settings, and what happened. These details give support a reproducible starting point. Never include payment card details or passwords.

If the alarm sounds but you go back to sleep

If the sound is working and you remember dismissing it, another ringtone may not address your main difficulty. A mission alarm is designed to add a task before dismissal. Only Alarm uses this approach so silencing the alarm requires completing a wake-up mission.

Separate finishing that mission from staying up. Prepare a first action that takes you into your morning, then check whether you carry it out. A task can make dismissal deliberate, but the next choice still matters. For continued difficulty hearing an alarm, return to the sound and setup checks first.

Questions & answers

Does Silent mode stop an iPhone alarm?

Apple says Silent mode does not stop alarms in its built-in Clock app. For a third-party alarm, use that app's guidance and test your intended settings rather than assuming identical behavior.

What should I send Only Alarm support?

Send your iPhone model, iOS version, app version, the scheduled alarm time, relevant settings, and whether the alarm appeared or made a sound. Explain the steps needed to reproduce the issue.
